The Dal Lake at dawn — where the story of Kashmir begins
Nestled in the heart of Srinagar, The Kashmir Wraps was born from a singular conviction: that the ancient artistry of Kashmiri weavers deserved to be experienced by the world, not simply admired from a distance.
Every shawl that leaves our doors carries within it the whisper of mountain winds, the patient hands of artisans who have inherited centuries of knowledge, and the singular warmth of the Pashmina goat that grazes the high Himalayan pastures of Ladakh.
We are not simply selling a wrap. We are offering an heirloom — a piece that will outlast trends, that will be passed from mother to daughter, that will hold the stories of the hands that made it and the hands that wear it.
A single Kashmiri shawl can take months — sometimes years — to complete. Each step in this sacred journey is an art form in itself, passed down through generations of master craftspeople.
At altitudes above 14,000 feet, the Changthangi goat of Ladakh grows a coat of extraordinary fineness to survive the bitter winters. Each spring, herders gently comb — never shear — a few hundred grams of raw Pashm from each animal. This fibre, just 12–15 microns thick, is among the finest in the world.
"Real Pashmina cannot be rushed. The goat decides the season."
Raw Pashm is cleaned, de-haired, and hand-spun on a traditional wooden spindle called the Yinder. This process — performed exclusively by skilled women artisans — produces a yarn so fine it must be wound with utmost care. No machine can replicate this tension, this feel, this intimacy of hand.
A master weaver at his handloom will weave no more than one inch per day on a fine Pashmina shawl. The rhythmic interlacing of warp and weft requires complete concentration — a single distraction can break the tension of decades of practice. A plain Pashmina takes weeks; a Kani shawl with its intricate woven patterns can take two years.
On the finished woven cloth, master embroiderers (Soznikar) stitch intricate floral and paisley motifs using a curved needle so fine it is barely visible. Sozni embroidery is unique to Kashmir — both sides of the fabric appear identical, with no visible knots. A shawl can hold over 100,000 individual stitches.
After washing, stretching, and the final quality inspection by our master craftsman, the shawl emerges — buttery soft, impossibly light, carrying within its fibres the high-altitude air of the Himalayas and the centuries of artistry of the Kashmir Valley. It is now ready to become yours.
Each piece is individually selected, authenticated, and presented with the care befitting a true luxury object.
Pure Changthangi Pashmina — the pinnacle of fibre luxury. 12–15 microns of warmth woven into wearable poetry.
